Description
Oval horizontal dial with single latitude in silver by Guillaume Ferrier, Paris, circa 1650.
Silver, brass and glass; 5.6x4.2 cm; in its red velvet-lined leather case.
Small horizontal oval pocket dial in silver and brass, preserved in its original leather case.
The small dial measures 56x42mm.
The silver gnomon has a fixed latitude and is superbly decorated with floral and grotesque motifs.
The silver plate is engraved with the hour scale divided into III to XII and I to VIII, subdivided every quarter of an hour. In the centre, a sun with half-closed, beaming eyes. At the bottom, the signature "Ferrier à Paris", i.e. Guillaume Ferrier, who worked between 1618 and 1662.
On the back of the compass is a beautiful rose window. The spring on the back is brass and may have been rebuilt.
This early signature is extremely rare. Dials of a different shape signed by Ferrier are known in the Billmeir and Oxford collections.
