Description
Gilt brass equinoctial ring, Germany, circa 1700. Gilded brass, brass and steel; 6.3cm diameter and 8cm high with the hoop. The ring, made of brass and gilded brass, consists of two circles, one of which can be folded down, and a central blade that can be rotated on itself. The outer ring is engraved with a latitude scale divided from 0 to 90 degrees, around which the slider on the suspension ring can be turned to set the instrument to the desired latitude. This same ring is finely engraved with the names and latitudes of 16 cities. The inner ring is engraved with an hour scale of twice I-XII and, on its inner edge, a second hour scale divided from 1 to 24. It also bears the names and latitudes of 24 cities. In the centre, a central pivoting blade is divided on one side into the months of the year and on the other into a zodiacal scale. The opening for the sun's rays slides along these two scales. An absolutely identical ring is known to exist in the Metropolitan Museum (also unsigned). The attribution of these beautifully made rings is not certain. They could be associated, without certainty, with the work of Rugendas and Martin, both of whom were active in Augsburg at the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth. eighteenth century. Perfect condition for this fine German ring.
