Description
Round horizontal sundial, Italy, 18th century.
Wood, steel, brass and glass; 9.1 cm diameter.
Typically Italian shape of a round horizontal pocket sundial made of wood. The instrument is complete with pointer and cover.
A slightly hollow sphere contains a small compass bearing the initials of the four Italian winds: Mezzogiorno, Ponente, Tramontana and Levante, and a sundial showing the Italian hours from 9 to 22. In the centre is a small brass gnomon.
These dials are typically Italian. They are often the semi-artisanal work of learned clerics.
A fine example of a sundial that is uncommon outside Italy.
