Description
Brass astronomical quadrant attributable to Girolamo Della Volpaia, Italy, Florence, circa 1600.
Brass; 6x6cm.
Brass quadrant or quarter-circle sundial, unsigned but attributable to Girolamo Della Volpaia, the last representative of the Della Volpaia family of Florentine builders of scientific instruments and astronomical clocks.
The front of the dial is engraved with a latitude of 43 degrees and 40 minutes, the latitude of the city of Florence. It features a shadow square, hour scales for Italian hours, a calendar of the months relative to these different scales and, around its perimeter, a division into 90 degrees.
On the reverse, a scale showing the course of the sun according to the different months of the year and its entry into the signs of the zodiac is composed of three circles, including a ring of the signs of the zodiac, a circle of the twelve months of the year and a circle of figures relating to each of the months of the year allowing this solar calculation.
A very rare quarter-circle sundial dating from the late 16th century and attributable to one of the most prestigious Italian manufacturing families of the 16th century.
The quadrant has kept its two pinnules, the lead is a replacement.
Very good condition.
