Description
Brass sundial with single latitude for 51 degrees north, Germany, circa 1760-1770.
Brass, steel and glass; 8.4x8.4 cm, in its original leather case lined with chamois leather.
Rare form of a single-latitude sundial fitted with a self-contained level, all preserved in a decorated speckled leather case. The brass sundial has a single latitude for 51 or 52 degrees North. The perpendicular level is used to check that the dial is placed on a perfectly flat surface to ensure that the instrument is horizontal when in use. The large compass is complete with needle. It bears the initials of the four cardinal points: N, O, S, W. The hour circle is divided into IV-XII-VIII.
