Description
Horizontal octagonal dial with single latitude, circa 1660.
Silver, gilt brass, steel and glass; 4.6x3.5 cm. In its original case.
Small horizontal pocket dial preserved in its original leather case and made of silver and gilt brass. The dial is almost miniature in size, 46×35 mm. The gnomon, in gilt brass, has a fixed latitude and is superbly decorated with an eagle with open wings. Based on the latitude of the dial, we can attribute this work to Salomon Chesnon. The silver plate is engraved with the hour scale divided into III to XII and I to VIII, subdivided every half hour. The miniature dial is in perfect condition with its original hand still magnetised.
The signature on the back is not original, but later. Nevertheless, a rare and early fixed-latitude sundial in perfect condition.
