Description
A pair of ormolu and patinated sconces with two arms, decorated with oak branches with leaves and acorns, the shaft in the shape of a couleuvrine.
Antique Louis XVI style
H. 44 cm ; W. 25.5 cm ; D. 11.5 cm
(Electrically pierced and mounted - wear)
Our pair of sconces is similar to the very famous model that belonged to the Count of Artois for his bedroom in his Bagatelle folly. A watercolour by François-Joseph Bélanger (1744-1818), the prince's first architect, shows them in his design. Other known examples include one from the Georges Geoffroy Collection, sold in Paris on 2 December 1971, lot 82, then by the Fondation Bemberg, Toulouse, and one from the Lagarfeld Collection, sold at Christie's in Monaco on 24 April 2000, lot 284. In these two pairs, the arms of light are formed of grained laurel leaves, and the barrel is embellished with drapery and artillery balls supported by chains, reminiscent of the composition of a drawing by Jean-Louis Prieur, circa 1770, in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Finally, an exceptional pair was recently sold, from the Dillée Collection, at Sotheby's in Paris on 18 March 2015, lot 129.
