Estimate €7,000 - €10,000
Description
Italian school of the late 16th - early 17th century Head of a Roman emperor, probably Titus Marble H. 49 cm This antique-style head could be a continuation of the work of Agostino Zoppo (circa 1520 - 1572), a sculptor in Padua in the mid-16th century, where he ran a prolific workshop, notably producing bronzes, some of which are in the collections of the Victoria and Albert, the Metropolitan and the Frick Collection. For a marble sculpture by Zoppo, see the Bust of guido of Arezzo sold at Sotheby's in Milan on 22 March 2023, lot 33. We can see a certain similarity in the way the artist works on the complexions and pupils. Provenance : Sotheby's sale, London, 28 September 1979, lot 104
