Description
A pair of Chinese porcelain mounted vases with a lavender-blue background decorated with branches, flowers and birds. The porcelain from the Qianlong period (1735-1796) and the bronze mounting from the Neoclassical period.
H. 26 cm
This lavender-blue porcelain with floral decoration was particularly popular in the second half of the 18th century. There are several examples of pairs of vases with Neoclassical gilt bronze mounts, including those from the Alexander collection, Christie's New York sale, 30 April 1999, lots 12 and 13; and from the former Riahi collection, Sotheby's Paris sale, 6 July 2017, lot 114.
Provenance:
- Possibly the estate of Baroness Burton at Chesterfield House, probably the pair photographed in the small dining room on 17 August 1886 and then in the library in 1908.
- Anonymous sale (His Excellency Ilhamy Hussein Pacha, Villa Sylvia / Baia dei Fiori, Cap-Ferrat); Christie's, London, 17 June 1987, lot 30.
- Acquired by Lord Arnold Weinstock and Lady Weinstock from Partridge Fine Arts, London, 30 September 1988.
- Collection of Lord and Lady Weinstock, Grosvenor Square, London.
