Description
A pair of chased bronze and gilt and brown patina "dog" andirons. They sit on a cushion on a rectangular base with rounded corners decorated with a frieze of leafy posts and shells. They stand on curved legs edged with acanthus leaves. Louis XVI period, after a model by Philippe Caffieri (1714-1774) H. 33 cm - W. 26 cm - D. 21.5 cm (One foot to be fixed, wear to the gilding) This rare model with dogs, of which few examples are known, is to be compared with a pair made by Philippe Caffieri, illustrated in E. S. Eriksen, Early Neoclassicims in France, 1974, pl. 223 with a dog and cat. This famous and charming representation, created around 1770, perfectly embodies the transition style between the end of the reign of Louis XV and the beginning of Louis XVI, marking the passage from rococo inventiveness to neoclassicism. Svend Eriksen reports that Philippe's father, Jacques, already owned models of andirons depicting a cat and a dog as early as 1755, as attested by an inventory of his stock (see S. Eriksen, Early Neo-Classicism in France, London, 1974, p. 357). Philippe also supplied a pair to the Prince de Condé in 1773, for which he received the sum of 1,120 livres. A similar pair of andirons was sold at Christie's New York on 12 November 1981, lot 34. Other examples have also been sold, see Sotheby's Monaco, 23 June 1976, lot 146; Sotheby's Monaco, 21 June 1988, lot 800; and for a model with a dog and cat sitting on a cushion see Sotheby's London, 28 November 2022, lot 28.
