Description
Probably late 19th century Neapolitan school after Apollonius (active in the 1st century AD) Doryphorus head Brown patina bronze sculpture on white marble pedestal H. 57 cm Our head is a copy of an antique bronze discovered in 1753 in the ruins of the Villa dei Papyri in Herculaneum (now in the Archaeological Museum of Naples, inv. no. 4885). This antique bronze, attributed to the Greek sculptor Apollonius (1st century BC), depicts an athlete of ideal beauty with his head slightly turned, and is reputed to be one of the best copies of Polyclitus' famous Doryphorus (literally the "spear-bearer", a lost original dating from the 5th century BC). The Greek inscription on the front reads: 'Apollonius of Athens, son of Archias made this'.
