Description
CHINA, 18th century, FRANCE, 19th century
A pair of large carved soapstone figures, each in the form of a Luohan, the disciples of Buddha depicted standing, the details of their faces and clothing finely incised and carved, one depicted reading, the other holding a bird. The figures are treated in contrasting shades, one warm orange-brown, the other lighter, almost ivory, and highlighted with polychrome details. Accompanied by large French ormolu mounts in the form of finely chased foliage scrolls rising on either side of the figures and developing into three arms of light forming candelabras. The foliage, animated by scrolls and flowering stems, frames the figures in a balanced and richly ornate composition. The ensemble rests on high marble platforms, underlined by gilded bronze mounts in the style of the Escalier de Cristal productions.
Height: 27 cm
With mount: 51 cm
Provenance: "Escalier de Cristal" label under one of the candelabras.
