Christ with ties among the soldiers
Oil on canvas,
95.5 x 131 cm
Born in Taverna, Calabria, Gregorio Preti (1603-1672) was the elder brother of the famous painter Mattia Preti (1613-1699). Although less well-known today than the latter, Gregorio played an important role in his artistic training and played an active part in the spread of the Caravaggesque style in southern Italy in the 17th century. Largely inspired by Caravaggio, Gregorio developed a dramatic religious style characterised by pronounced chiaroscuro - visible here in the sharp contrast between the figure of Christ and the soldiers.
In this work, the light isolates the face and part of the bust of Christ in the centre of the composition, while the figures of the soldiers appear partially in the dark, accentuating the dramatic tension of the scene. The contrast between what appears to be Christ's resigned serenity and the agitation of the executioners also serves to heighten the pathos of this depiction, which is surprising for its chromatic homogeneity and for the darkness of the background against which the figures stand out.
