A Dutch painter active in Utrecht, Jan van Bijlert (or Biljert) (1597/98-1671) belonged to the group of Utrecht Caravaggists, artists profoundly influenced by Caravaggio after his work spread throughout the United Provinces in the 17th century. A member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Utrecht from the 1620s, Bijlert evolved in an artistic milieu particularly inspired by the naturalism and tragedy of Italian Caravaggio. He developed a style of religious painting characterised by tight compositions, a taste for the psychology of the figures and a delicate use of chiaroscuro using limited palettes.
Mainly intended for churches and religious commissions, the work of Jan van Bijlert illustrates the aesthetic of the Counter-Reformation, which sought to move the faithful and strengthen their devotion. The play of chiaroscuro in the work fully captures the intensity of the emotions of the figures depicted, with the suffering of Christ on one side and the violence of the soldiers on the other.
