The choice of the subject of Susanna and the Old Men (Daniel, 13), particularly prized in the 17th century for its dramatic power and moral charge, naturally finds its place in the corpus of Flemish painters marked by the Antwerp Baroque. Suzanne, a virtuous young woman, is caught in the bath by two elderly judges who try to coerce her. When she refuses, she is falsely accused and later exonerated. The composition, animated by strong diagonal lines, captures the moment of drama with intensity: it contrasts Suzanne's luminous, vulnerable nudity with the darker, oppressive figures of her assailants. Largely influenced by Rubens, the master of Baroque flesh painting, artists working in Antwerp such as Diepenbeeck exalted the richness of the drapery and the expressive intensity of the faces, contributing to the expansion of the Flemish taste for grandiose, theatrical biblical scenes.
