Description
Chased and gilt bronze clock decorated with an island sailor leaning against a cotton bundle, itself topped by a purse symbolising trade. The white enamel dial in the centre of the bundle, with black hour markers and Roman numerals for the hours, is signed G. Rouma in Liège. The scene rests on a base engraved in reserve with a scene of putti unloading a ship and selling its contents, flanked by the attributes of commerce. The clock rests on four feet depicting barrels.
First half of the 19th century.
H. 37 cm; W: 31 cm; D: 13 cm
(Slight accidents and mechanism not verified)
History: This clock is similar to a drawing registered under the name of Michel in August 1808 (Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris). Numerous identical clocks in two sizes, 38 and 18 cm, one of each size, are in the Duesberg Museum in Mons, Belgium.
