Louis XVI period, in the style of the work of Charles Delafosse
(1734-1791)
H. 88.5 - W. 129 - D. 70 cm
(to be verified; old restorations, small accidents and wear; marble restored and reinforced)
This console table is representative of the Greek-style taste of the 1770s, whose principles Delafosse helped to disseminate. Its style, characteristic of the classical revival in reaction to the Rococo style, was inspired by Antiquity, rediscovered in the 1750s thanks to archaeological excavations in Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy.
This neoclassical style was encouraged by a group of discerning aesthetes and collectors such as the Comte de Caylus (1692-1765), the financier Ange-Laurent Lalive de July (1725-1779), the Duc de Choiseul (1719-1785) and the Marquis de Marigny (1727-1781).
Among the rare examples comparable in their decorative repertoire of rich falling garlands known as "corde à puits" and powerful sheathed uprights is the console from the former Karl Lagerfeld collection (Christie's Monaco sale, 28-29 April 2000, lot 39, then Christie's Paris sale, 27 April 2021, lot 213).
