Description
An important pair of sconces with two foliate and knotted arms in chased and gilt bronze, richly decorated with acanthus leaves, flower buds, pompons and trimmings. The gadrooned bobèches and fluted binnacles are decorated with friezes of pearls.

A suite of four sconces of the same model is in the collections of the Château de Versailles. They came from the Ann and Gordon Getty collection sold at Christie's in New York on 22 October 2022, lots 326 and 327 and were acquired in the sale of the Wendell Cherry collection at Sotheby's New York on 20 May 1994, lots 39 and 40. "The motif of the drapery knotting leafy branches appears as early as 1756 on two pairs of rocaille sconces designed by Pierre Contant d'Ivry and delivered by Thomas Germain to the Duc d'Orléans for the Palais-Royal, purchased in 1786 by order of Louis XVI, restored by Feuchères and placed in the Queen's flat at Compiègne (now in the J.
