Anne-Louise-Germaine de Staël-Holstein (1766-1817)
Bronze patinated plaster
Circa 1817
H. 66 cm - W. 48 cm - D. 30 cm
Provenance: Château du Lac, Monestier (Dordogne)
This patinated plaster bust represents the famous writer Anne-Louis-Germaine de Staël. More than a simple portrait, this bust embodies the encounter between German Romanticism and French culture, symbolised by Madame de Staël.
Friedrich Tieck and Madame de Staël met for the first time in 1803 in Weimar, then the cultural and intellectual centre of Europe, where Goethe and Schiller lived. Following this meeting, she commissioned a bas-relief from him to decorate the family mausoleum near the Château de Coppet. In 1808, the artist travelled to Coppet and was commissioned to create a portrait of Madame de Staël. The original plaster bust is still preserved at Château de Coppet. Several copies were presented to personalities with whom she had special relationships, such as the Duchess Louise of Saxe-Weimar (marble copy), the Crown Prince of Bavaria, Baron von Voght, and the Broglie family (bronze). Our bust is similar to the one held by the Bibliothèque de Genève (N° inv 0330), acquired in 1834.
