Description
Rare complete living-room furniture in natural walnut, moulded and carved with foliage, comprising a suite of ten queen-size armchairs, a basket sofa and a pair of gondola armchairs. The curved backs and recessed armrests rest on curved belts and cambered legs. Worked in Bordeaux during the Louis XV period. Napoleon III period yellow velvet upholstery (wear). - Armchairs: H. 92 cm - W. 67 cm. - Bergères: H. 93 cm - W. 70 cm. - Sofa: H. 110 cm - W. 193 cm - D. 90 cm. Provenance : - According to the family this furniture comes from the bishopric of Auch and was inherited by the nephews of the bishop in the early 19th century, then remained in the family then by descent and sold in 2018. Bibliography: - Inventory of French public collections RNM, p. 124,125 and 126. Similar seats in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Bordeaux from Château Labottière, such as the seven-legged Ottoman sofa which is very similar to ours. It is extremely rare, not to say unique, for a complete set of ten armchairs to have survived to the present day, as most of them were divided up by inheritance in the 19th and 20th centuries. Typically made in Bordeaux, this type of chair is not easy to date during the 18th century, as the Louis XV style was to endure in Bordeaux under Louis XVI.
