Description
Red morocco wallet embroidered with silver thread and silk thread, the lock in silver chased and gilded, decorated with a network of interlacing, floral bouquets, arabesques and shells, the reverse bears the wedding arms of Alexandre de Cohorn (1732-1816) and Anne Marie Dupont (1751-1799). The flap is inscribed "Mde la Barone de Cohorn" and embellished with an iron decoration of the arms of the said coats of arms. The inside is in blue moiré silk tabis. Ottoman work, Constantinople for the European market circa 1770. H. 34.3cm; W. 25.5cm Minor accidents, missing parts and wear. Only two examples of this embroidered wallet are known from Constantinople. One bears the arms of Jean Baptiste de Machaut d'Arnouville (1701-1794), Secretary of State for the Navy, and is kept at the Château de Thoiry. The other, bearing the arms of César Gabriel de Choiseul, Duke of Praslin, came from the Charles Wrightsman collection and is now in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. It featured in the exhibition "Louis XV: Un Moment de la Perfection de l'art français," held at the Hôtel de la Monnaie in 1974. These three portfolios use the characteristic bordering technique of the Levantine countries, using a paper bead to support the twisted threads laid in herringbone pattern to give relief to the decoration. Alexandre de Cohorn, Governor of Villeneuve and ensign, married Anne Marie Dupont on 23 November 1772.
