Description
A large silver tripod jug. It rests on three legs with rocaille-decorated fittings; the body is decorated with twisted ribs extending up to the neck, which is encircled by a pronounced moulding with stepped sections. The twisted ribs continue onto the lid, this time running in the opposite direction in the manner of a whip’s lash, and terminate at the base of a flower-shaped bud. The spout features a moulded applied leaf, a straight handle and the original turned wooden grip. On the base of the body are the Lille hallmarks of 1761, belonging to master silversmith Antoine Joseph Gellez (his large hallmark), awarded in 1749. The lid is fully hallmarked (the silversmith’s small hallmark), which is also repeated on the inner surface of each foot. A fine jug in the great tradition of craftsmanship and elegance of the Lille silversmiths. The Lille silversmith Pierre Joseph Pontus produced a perfectly comparable piece in 1746 (David-Weill auction, 24 November 1971, lot 82). Height: 28 cm. Gross weight: 1296 g. Minor knocks. A warmer by Antoine Joseph Gellez is held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
