Description
Buddha, Myanmar (Burma), 19th century.
Lacquered and gilded wood.
Height: 59cm.
Seated on a stepped throne, the Buddha wears the monastic vestment and makes the gesture of taking the earth as witness. The earlobes are elongated, the serene expression expressed by half-closed eyes and a slight smile. The head is surmounted by the cranial protuberance and a flame. The base is decorated with an inscription in a cartouche (a devotional formula or dedication) as well as geometric decoration painted in gold.
(Erosion, wear, visible missing gilding and lacquer, accidents, broken base on the left).
