A draughtsman, painter and sculptor trained by Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921) at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris, Gustave Surand specialised in depicting the great fauvists from life studies. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1881 and was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre de la Légion d'Honneur in 1909. His studio collection was sold at Hôtel Drouot on 28 February 1973.
Our pastel can be compared with another drawing by Gustave Surand depicting the same subject with a variation in the attitude of the model's head at the Millon & Associés sale, Neuilly-sur-Marne, 20 April 2022, lot no. 96.
