Description
Egypt - REYBAUD (Louis)]. Scientific and military history of the French expedition to Egypt. Dedicated to the King. [ATLAS volume one only]. Paris, Denain et Delamare, 1830-1834. 1 vol. in-4 oblong (of 2), modern half-binding.
First volume only of the atlas, complete with 160 plates. Light spotting.
The work, which must comprise a total of 10 volumes of text and 2 atlases, appeared in issues from 1830 to 1834 and was reprinted several times, remaining one of the essential sources on the Egyptian Campaign. Divided into 3 parts (ancient history, Bonaparte's expedition and modern history), the work was produced under the direction of the orientalist Jean-Joseph Marcel, who took part in the expedition, founded the Cairo printing works and later directed the Imprimerie Nationale, the economist Louis Reybaud, and the historians Agricole Fortia d'Urban and Achille de Vaulabelle ; They drew on first-hand documents from Berthier, Generals Michaux and Belliard, de Larrey, Desgenettes, Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Poussielgue and the Comte d'Aure, among others. The plates in the atlases, which sometimes bear several compositions, are largely based on the iconography of Dominique Vivant Denon's Voyage en Basse et Haute Égypte and the great Description de l'Égypte.
