Description
An onyx and ormolu vase, the body flanked by two lions' heads supporting rings, resting on an openwork base with scrolls.
Sté des Onyx, H. Journet & Cie, 24 Bd Italiens, numbered 3187.
Late 19th century.
This basin was inspired by a model by Eugène Cornu (1827-1875). In the 1870s, this sculptor and ornamentalist took over the management of the Compagnie des Marbres Onyx d'Algérie, founded in 1858, which became the Société des Onyx d'Algérie E. Cornu et Cie. The company specialised in the production of onyx objects mounted in bronze and decorated with enamel. Some models identical to these basins bear the signature "E. CORNU Bd des Italiens". These shapes remained when H. Journet was at the head of the company. The catalogue of the sale following the liquidation of the company mentions numerous objects with bronze mounts decorated with chimeras.
