Description
Shakyamuni Buddha.
Bronze with remains of gilding.
Tibet, 15th-16th century.
Height: 17.5 cm. Width: 13.5 cm.
The Buddha is represented here according to classical iconography, performing the canonical gesture of taking the Earth as witness. Seated in a frontal position, his legs are bent in the vajra posture (Vajrāsana). His left hand makes the gesture of meditation with the palm turned towards the sky, and his right hand touches the earth. We can observe his ears with pierced and distended lobes, the three folds of his neck and his uṣṇīṣa cranial protuberance. His garment is edged with beaded friezes engraved with plant motifs. Glued to the Buddha's body, it covers only his left shoulder, over which a pleated end falls. The base is decorated with a frieze of double lotus petals in relief, framed by two beaded friezes.
(Worn gilding, small restoration visible on one hand).
