Restoration of the Borgia flats. The famous Borgia flat, which was the residence of Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia 1492-1503), is a jewel of the Renaissance.
The medal depicts a detail from one of Bernardino Pinturicchio's frescoes, the "Resurrection", which can be found in the Hall of the Mysteries of the Faith in the Borgia Palace. Clad in a golden cloak, studded with embroidery and precious stones, Alexander VI is depicted in an attitude of prayer with such power that Corrado Ricci, in his book on Pinturicchio, speculated that the pope might have posed personally for the Umbrian painter. After the death of Alexander VI, the popes lived on the upper floor, in Raphael's so-called flats. Later, when the great palace beyond the courtyard of San Damaso was built, the Borgian flat was almost abandoned. The recovery of this Renaissance jewel is due to Leo XIII, who ordered a careful restoration that saved this precious artistic heritage.
