Description
BEAUTIFUL AND LARGE "EN CASQUE DE MARS" EAGUIER, TOULOUSE, FIRST HALF OF THE 18th CENTURY
in pewter, with an S-shaped throat, a nicely shaped beak, and a curved and moulded pedestal topped by a knot; it has a handle with a draped stock and long gadroons. The base is decorated with a frieze of tongues in relief.
Hallmark: FF crowned / 1709 / TOL (FF for "fine pewter" and TOL for Tolosa, the former name of the town).
(In very good condition, small cracks at the edge of the throat).
AN IMPORTANT "EN CASQUE DE MARS" TIN EWER, TOULOUSE, FIRST HALF OF THE 18TH CENTURY
28,30 CM - 11,1 IN.
Very rare type III model with a type II handle variant (§ René Richard: "Potiers d'étain de l'ancien Languedoc et du Roussillon"). This is one of the finest examples of French pewterware.
In TOULOUSE, the royal edict of 1691 introducing the hallmark was not respected and we only know those of 1691, 1695, 1699, 1700 and 1709, whereas it was supposed to be updated with each new vintage. This town was not the only one in the kingdom to do so. The presence of the 1709 hallmark on an object therefore makes it impossible to precisely date those bearing it.
