Description
VERY RARE BALUSTRATED JUG, PORTUGAL (PORTO), FIRST HALF OF THE 18th CENTURY
in pewter with cylindrical base and doucine foot, quarter-round goblet, domed lid with plain curved poucier.
A faint ownership mark (?) on the lid.
Very incompletely legible stamp of Joze Antonio FRIAS active from 1701.
A RARE BALUSTER PITCHER, PORTUGAL (PORTO), FIRST HALF OF THE 18TH CENTURY
24,70 CM - 9,7 IN.
Hallmarks were deliberately damaged at certain periods in history when it was dangerous to have objects bearing royal symbols, in this case a crown, in one's home. The same observation was made many times in France at the end of the 18th century.
Items from this source are extremely rare (even there!) and usually unmarked. Indeed, although Spain supplied much of Europe with pewter ore, Spanish and Portuguese pewter is extremely rare.
Identical piece and hallmark reproduced in "Estanhos portugueses" by Rolando van Zeller.
