A LARGE AND ELEGANT TIN CIMARRE, JOINVILLE OR MONTBARD, LATE 17TH CENTURY
28,80 CM - 11,3 IN.
Cimarres were produced mainly in Champagne, although we have seen a few examples in the Île-de-France and Franche-Comté regions. They were used to serve wine at the table when guests wished to be particularly honoured.
The one shown here was made using the longitudinal casting technique that was in use until the 1700s. On the inside, you can see the two vertical welds of the two symmetrical parts that come out of the mould, which is made up of two shells, and on the inside, the pastille that obstructs the hole left by the central axis of the mould. Then, from the very beginning of the 18th century, the masters abandoned this technique and adopted radial casting.
