ENCRIER, POSSIBLY BY THE CRYSTAL STAIR, 19th CENTURY
An oval-shaped Japanese porcelain Takarabune Caravelle decorated with an engraved glass flotsam and jetsam. It opens with a lid revealing an openwork latticework inkwell with two cups. The base is encircled by a guilloche and gadrooned moulding and rests on ball feet.

The Takarabune caravel represents a ship carrying the Seven Gods of Luck and sailing through the skies during the first days of the New Year, visiting lucky humans to bring them prosperity. Its sail is decorated with the character 'takara' and it carries magical objects and treasures such as coral, the magic hammer of 'Daikokuten', a scroll of wisdom, coins and more.
