Henri Le Sidaner (1862-1939)
In 1880, Henri Le Sidaner left to study in Paris, where he discovered recent developments in painting, Impressionism and the work of Manet. That same year, Henri's father died in a shipwreck in the English Channel. In 1882, Henri Le Sidaner was admitted to the École nationale des Beaux-arts and entered the studio of Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889), one of the leading painters of the academic movement and a renowned teacher. In 1894, Henri Le Sidaner moved closer to the latest artistic movements, Symbolism and Impressionism. In 1896, he met the famous gallery owner Georges Petit, with whom he signed an exclusive contract. Two years later, he joined the "intimist" movement, in which human subjects disappeared from the paintings to make way for scenes of nature, architecture and gardens.
