Étienne Avril (1748-1791) was one of the great Parisian cabinet-makers of the reign of Louis XVI. Awarded the title of Master in 1774, he developed a workshop in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine renowned for the sober elegance of his creations. His furniture is characterised by balanced neoclassical lines, the refined use of mahogany and extremely fine gilded bronze decoration.
He mainly made chests of drawers, secretaries and small tables for an aristocratic clientele close to the Court. Several of his works are now housed in major institutions, including the Château de Fontainebleau, the Musée Marmottan Monet and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Lyon, testifying to the important place he occupies in the history of 18th-century French decorative arts.
