PUPITER WRITING TABLE BASED ON A MODEL BY ADAM WEISWEILER, FOR THE CABINET INTÉRIEUR DE MARIE-ANTOINETTE AT THE CHÂTEAU DE SAINT CLOUD, LOUIS XVI STYLE, LATE 19th CENTURY
Rectangular, all sides; in ebony, blued steel, ormolu, Japanese lacquer and mother-of-pearl. The belt opens to three drawers with a central recess decorated with plates framed with guilloché reserves, decorated with winged sphinxes terminating in foliate foliage, holding in the centre a radiating medallion with a woman's mask, shouldered with garlands of flowers. The uprights are in the form of caryatids with the bust of a draped woman joined by a brace centred on a basket with openwork latticework; the tapered legs have twisted canals; the desk top is embellished in the centre with a lacustrian landscape with pagodas and plants surrounded by a chequered frieze, with reserves on either side with a background of spiral motifs, aventurine lacquer and foliage, surrounded by an openwork gallery.
