Description
Alfred ROLL (1846-1919), "About Baccarat", 1869, oil on canvas, signed lower right, 90 x 140, (craquelures, restorations). Alfred Roll was nicknamed the "Zola of painting" and embodied the third way between academism and impressionism: naturalism. Our painting was produced in 1869 in Rixens's studio on the artist's return from a trip to the Vosges mountains, and was originally entitled "A stream in a valley". The painting was executed for the Troyon competition and exhibited at the 1870 Salon, where it was well received. It clearly shows the influence of the great realists such as Courbet and Harpignies, with whom he had worked. This painting can be considered one of the first important works in Roll's body of work, in which landscapes are rare. Bibliography: J. VALMAY-BAYSSE, Les peintres d'Aujourd'hui : Alfred ROLL sa vie - son oeuvre, p. 6. * Sold by appointment, Paris VIIe arr. * Expert: Cabinet Artéon.
