Description
Georges-Antoine ROCHEGROSSE (1859-1938) Under the lamp, children playing toy soldiers 1896 Oil on canvas, dated 96 and dedicated to Octave Courtois-Suffit lower right 81 x 100.5 cm (BE) We would like to thank Laurent Houssais who kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work and who kindly indicated: This work bears witness to the friendly relationship between the painter Georges-Antoine Rochegrosse (1859-1938) and the architect Louis Albert Octave Courtois-Suffit (1856-1902). At the 1883 Salon, both men received awards from the Conseil supérieur des Beaux-Arts: Rochegrosse won the Salon Prize for his monumental and spectacular Andromaque (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rouen), which enabled him to travel around Europe for two years, while Octave Courtois-Suffit, who received an honourable mention, was awarded a travel grant. In the last months of 1883, the two men - who had probably known each other beforehand at the École des Beaux-Arts (they had both been shortlisted for the Prix de Rome in 1882, in their respective sections) - toured Italy together. Their relationship endured over time: Octave Courtois-Suffit was responsible for the pedestal of the monument erected to the memory of Rochegrosse's father-in-law, the Parnassian poet Théodore de Banville (1823-1891), in the Luxembourg gardens, and they worked closely together on the sumptuous mausoleum of the Faynot family (Bourgogne-Fresne cemetery, Marne). The three children in the painting are almost certainly Pierre, Roger and Jacques Courtois-Suffit.
