Description
THAILAND - 19th century Ink and colour on canvas, stupa adoration, in a garden enclosed by high ornate balustrades in the middle of a luxuriant forest. The lower part, situated in the forest outside the sacred enclosure of the stupa, is animated by a jataka located in Jetavana, where terrified Brahmins ask the Buddha for help following the death of one of their number from a snake bite. The Buddha then taught them Metta, universal benevolence, with which he would tame and appease the poisonous snakes. We see him seated, performing the gesture of freedom from fear, while Brahmins present him with the snakes, and servants and courtiers flee in fear. (Minor damage to the paint layer). 175 x 81 cm. Mounted on a scroll.
