Description
An ormolu cartel with Diana the Huntress, decorated with children, the dial with Roman and Arabic numerals in a frame of openwork trelliswork, foliage, clasps and flowers, with a later period inscription on the side of the cartel indicating a gift from the Queen [Marie Lesczinska] to Mr Capperon, her dental surgeon, on 2 May 1749; (wear and restorations; notably a drapery above the figure of Diana is missing).
The dial and movement (numbered 437) signed Louis François Herbault in Paris, clockmaker received master in 1743.
Attributed to Jean-Joseph de Saint Germain.

A similar cartel signed by the clockmaker Jean Baptiste Baillon and marked with a crowned c is now in the Musée du Louvre. Another cartel bears a similar inscription relating to a gift from Queen Marie Lesczinska to the same Capperon (sale Paris, Sotheby's, 16 October 2007, lot 80).
