Description
Léon Georges CALVES (1848–1923) Sowing in Champagne Oil on canvas, signed lower right Canvas: 151 x 241 cm Frame: 189 x 245 cm (Damage and restoration) History: Léon Georges Calvès (1848–1924) was a French painter trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. A pupil of Daubigny, Boulanger and Guillaumet, he made his debut at the 1870 Salon, where he initially exhibited watercolours before turning to oil painting. He specialised in depicting rural scenes, countryside landscapes and farm work, paying particular attention to draught horses. His style follows in the footsteps of the masters of the Barbizon School, such as Troyon and Millet, combining naturalistic rigour, a keen sense of light and a deep attachment to rural life. The painting we are presenting was exhibited at the 1880 Salon and is listed as no. 595 in the Salon catalogue.
