US patent granted to Alphonse DOLLFUS Marked PATENTED APRIL 26, 1898, GEM CAPPER & CORK PRESS PATENT 1898. Accepts 4 sizes of corks Black-painted cast iron with a gilded patina, mounted on a wooden base. An iconic model featured in BULL & PARADI’s *Wine Antiques & Collectibles*. Cork presses – for use in pharmacies or laboratories. These objects were used to compress corks that had been previously scalded, in order to reduce their size and facilitate their insertion into bottles. They were particularly indispensable in apothecaries and were intended to impress, both through their weight and their mechanism or decoration.
