Figurative cork press: ‘THE LYING DOG’ A rare figurative animal design depicting a lying dog. Red-patinated cast iron, designed to be placed on a table, Accommodates 4 sizes of corks. France. Late 19th century. This model is featured in the book by BULL & PARADI, *Wine Antiques & Collectibles*. Cork presses – pharmacy or laboratory use. These objects were used to compress corks that had previously been scalded, in order to reduce their size and facilitate their insertion into bottles. They were particularly indispensable in chemists’ shops and were intended to impress, both through their weight and their mechanism or decoration. With a few exceptions, the items put up for auction are illustrated and documented in the masterful work by BULL & PARADI, *Wine Antiques & Collectibles*, an internationally recognised reference work.
