Description
Figurative corkscrew: THE CADUCEUS A rare corkscrew depicting a coiled serpent with its head raised; the serpent, or caduceus, is the symbol of the medical professions. Green-patinated cast iron, designed to rest on a table. Accommodates 4 sizes of corks. France. Late 19th century. Model featured in the book by BULL & PARADI, *Wine Antiques & Collectibles*. Cork presses – used in pharmacies or laboratories. These objects were used to compress corks that had been previously scalded, in order to reduce their size and facilitate their insertion into bottles. They were particularly indispensable in chemists’ shops and were intended to impress, both through their weight and their mechanism or decoration. With a few exceptions, the items put up for auction are illustrated and documented in BULL & PARADI’s masterful work, *Wine Antiques & Collectibles*, an internationally recognised reference work.
