Description
Figurative cork press ‘LE TATOU’ A rare zoomorphic depiction of a shelled animal, the armadillo Cast-iron cork press with a dark patina, designed to be pressed down or secured to a table. Accommodates 4 sizes of cork. France. Late 19th century. Model featured in the book by BULL & PARADI, *Wine Antiques & Collectibles*. Cork presses – of the pharmacy or laboratory type. These objects were used to compress corks that had been scalded beforehand, in order to reduce their size and facilitate their insertion into bottles. They were particularly indispensable in chemists’ shops and were intended to impress, both through their weight and their mechanism or decoration. With a few exceptions, the items put up for auction are illustrated and documented in the masterful work by BULL & PARADI, *Wine Antiques & Collectibles*, an internationally recognised reference work.
