Description
Figurative cork-crusher, CROCODILE, bronze version A rare version. A bronze cork press with a golden patina, designed to be placed on a table, depicting a crocodile. Accommodates 4 sizes of corks. France. Late 19th century. Cork presses – used in pharmacies or laboratories. These objects were used to compress corks that had first been scalded, in order to reduce their size and facilitate their insertion into bottles. They were particularly indispensable in chemists’ shops and were intended to impress, both through their weight and their mechanism or decoration. With a few exceptions, the items being auctioned are illustrated and documented in the masterful work by BULL & PARADI, *Wine Antiques & Collectibles*, an internationally recognised reference work.
