SOUTHEAST ASIA A pair of two Burmese figurines in wood gilded with gold leaf in the Mandalay style (on a red lacquer background) depicting attendant monks. Inlaid decoration. Mandalay, 19th century. Height: 24 cm (cracks) Note: These two monks often accompany a Buddha figurine and are his principal disciples: Sariputta and Mogallana (the Pali versions of the Sanskrit names Sariputra and Maudgalyayana).
