Estimate €8,000 - €10,000
Description
ASTRONOMICAL REGULATOR, last quarter of the 18th century. Signed on the dial: ‘Lépine Hger du Roi 1780’; the movement features a pin escapement with a seconds hand. The brass dial, engraved with Roman numerals, features four displays at its centre and a date window below the 12 o’clock mark; below the 11 o’clock mark is the day of the week and its astrological symbol, whilst opposite, below the 1 o’clock mark, is the month and its zodiac sign. At eight o’clock are the indications for sunrise and sunset, showing the sun’s path, the length of the day indicated by slats, and the mean time over 24 hours shown by a hand. Opposite, at four o’clock, are the phases and age of the Moon. In the 19th or 20th century, this dial was trimmed of the minute markings (in fives) in Arabic numerals – the outlines of which can still be discerned – to accommodate this movement, which formerly featured quarter-hour chimes and the equation of time, housed in a mahogany case lined with fragments of antique tapestries (with inlaid glass). The knife-suspension pendulum consists of a simple wooden rod and a heavy lens. H.: 193 cm W.: 55 cm D.: approx. 30 cm Experts: Ms Emmanuelle Galand and Denis Corpechot, honorary expert.
