Note: Devotion to the Sacred Heart reached its peak in 1917 across all branches of the army. Insignia, pennants and flags were distributed in their millions at the front, largely by the Catholic community in France. Certain leagues had hundreds of thousands of pennants and banners made, depicting the Sacred Heart, intended for the troops, which the ‘Œuvre de l’Insigne du Sacré-Cœur’ dispatched free of charge by post, labelled as ‘linen’ or ‘preserves’, to military chaplains, mobilised priests and certain officers. Furthermore, several officers, on the recommendation of religious authorities, were reportedly endeavouring to consecrate their units to the Sacred Heart, through an act which constituted a flagrant violation of their men’s freedom of conscience and of the French State’s religious neutrality.
