Description
MEDALLION By Thomas Compigné "View of the Surroundings of Rome, painted on the lathe." In gilded pewter with polychrome painting; the reverse is in tortoiseshell. Attached frame in blackened wood (missing) 18th century Diameter: 8.5 cm (restoration work to the sky and chips on the reverse) Note: A painter and box-maker to King Louis XV, COMPIGNE specialised in producing relief paintings on pewter of exceptional quality. Having come from Italy, COMPIGNE settled in Paris at the ‘Roi David’ shop on Rue Greneta and specialised in boxes, backgammon, draughts and chess sets, snuff boxes and walking stick handles made of blonde tortoiseshell inlaid with gold. His technique, which remains something of a mystery, involved placing a sheet of tin – previously stamped using a die – onto a tortoiseshell or metal base, which he then decorated with gouache, gold and silver, and finished with a coloured varnish.
