ENGLISH SCHOOL, c. 1700, follower of Daniel MYTENS (1590–1647) Portrait of Charles I in royal attire, wearing the insignia of the Order of the Garter Canvas enlarged in the 18th century Height: 127 cm Width: 101 cm Antique carved wooden frame, ‘Maratta’ style Dimensions of the portrait: 72.5 x 59 cm; Dimensions of the whole: 127 x 101 cm. Bears a number in black felt-tip pen “71” and has a collection label on the reverse reading “from the Wanstead collection ‘IB 1822’”, bears a number in black chalk “11060” and a label “11144 Dobson” Bears a number on the reverse of the slightly damaged stretcher: “2214” Previous restorations Provenance: - Anonymous sale, Vienna, Anton Stöckl, 18 December 1911, lot 13 (William Dobson); - Old Master Paintings, Paris, Hôtel Drouot (Maître Loudmer), 29 October 1985, lot 71 (school of van Dyck). Exhibition: Orders of Chivalry and National Honours, Paris, Musée de la Monnaie, 20 March–18 June 1956, no. 403. Bibliography: U. The crown bears a strong resemblance to a lost piece from the Tudor Crown Jewels, the Tudor State Crown. This was created for Henry VIII and disappeared during the English Civil War in 1649, having been melted down on the orders of Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell. Another symbolic object from the Tudor Crown Jewels is present : the ‘Orb of State’, the royal globe. The portrait is comparable to the engraving by Willem Jacobsz. Delff. Expert: Cabinet Turquin
